Bhoothathankettu, famous for its dam, a scenic picnic spot situtated inside the virgin forest, around 63 kilometers from Kothamangalam, close to Salim Ali Bird Sancturay at Thattekadu. Tall mountains, a calm lake, the river periyar and all make it a tribute to nature. It is around 100 m. above seal level and has a moderate climate. The dam and its reservoir are famous for boating. Trekking through the evergreen forest is awesome. A myth connected with the origin of this place says that this natural fortification of forests and hills was built by Bhoothams (spirit/ghosts) overnight. Hence the name Bhoothathankettu (fort of the spirits). The Idamalayar reservoir is around 12 km from Boothathankettu. It also a promising spot for botanists, adventureres and environmentalist because of its high terrain and a wide variety of flora and fauna. The best time for visit from November to February.
